RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's basketball team had no trouble shattering cross-town rival Saint Augustine's University, 92-55 for a CIAA Southern Division contest. The Lady Bears extended their win-streak to seven games and post a 17-6 overall record, 9-1 in the CIAA and 5-0 mark in the Southern Division.
The Lady Bears outscored SAU (3-18, 0-11 CIAA) in all four quarters, while shooting 50-percent (34-67) from the floor, 38.5 percent (5-13) from the 3-point line and 79.2 percent (19-24) from the charity stripe.
Tabatha Anderson (Manhattan Beach, CA) led all scorers with 19 points, four rebounds and two assists. Laquisha Taylor (Charlotte, NC) hauled in 15 points and nine rebounds, while Kaula Jacks (Chesapeake Beach, MD) registered her first double-double on the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while dishing out four assists. Fantasha Tyson netted 11 points and a game-high six assists, followed by Aaliyah Mercer (Bronx, NY) with 10 points.
SU connected 18-of-32 from the field for 56-percent in the first half. The Lady Bears outscored the Lady Falcons 28-12 in the first quarter and would build their largest lead at 18 points (47-29) of the first half at intermission.
Shaw scored 26 points in the paint, 20 points from the bench, while posting an 8-2 advantage in fast break points. Taylor led all scorers at the break with 15 points and eight rebounds.
The Lady Bears used an 8-2 run to start the second half as Anderson accounted for two 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to extend Shaw's lead 55-31 over SAU. Shaw did not relent the lead and SAU would never get any closer than 16 points for the remainder of the contest.
Khadijah Payne led SAU in scoring with 12 points, while Shelby Stokes and Shankka Harris added 10 points apiece.
The Lady Bears will return to action on Wednesday, February 3rd when they play host to Virginia State University with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m. in Spaulding Gymnasium.
