LADY BEARS ROLL PAST JOHNSON C. SMITH, 93-74

RALEIGH, N.C.  – The Shaw University women's basketball team extended their winning-streak to six games after defeating Johnson C. Smith University, 93-74 on Saturday afternoon in Spaulding Gymnasium for a CIAA Southern Division contest. The Lady Bears had five players score in double figures, including Aaliyah Mercer (Bronx, NY) who registered a season-high 18 points and five rebounds.

 

With the win, Shaw improves to 16-5 overall, 8-1 in the CIAA, while JCSU post a 13-9 overall record and 6-5 in the league standings.

 

Kaula Jacks (Chesapeake Beach, MD) tallied 16 points and six rebounds, while Fantasha Tyson (Raleigh, NC) and Laquisha Taylor (Charlotte, NC) both finished with 15 points each. Eboni Ross (Columbia, SC) added 10 points and six rebounds to round out the Lady Bears in double digit scoring.

 

The Lady Bears led 17-2 midway through the first quarter but a series of turnovers for Shaw allowed the Lady Golden Bulls to cut the lead to seven points at the 1:22 mark. Despite seven miscues from the Lady Bears, SU was able to lead 24-18 at the end of the quarter.

 

Although JCSU managed to get within five points in the second quarter, Shaw led the remainder of the first half and would head into the locker room with the score 47-42 in favor of the Lady Bears.

 

For the first half, Shaw outrebounded JCSU 47-42 but the Lady Golden Bulls scored 26 points in the paint compared to the Lady Bears 16 points, while also scoring 30 points in bench scoring. Mercer led SU in scoring with 12 points, while Ashley Porter led all scorers with 16 points at the break.

 

JCSU clawed their way back in the game and would tie the contest at 51-all but the Lady Bears slowly progressed a 7-1 run in the third quarter to keep the Lady Golden Bulls at arms distance. Shaw would build a 10-point lead over the course of two minutes in route to a 72-68 lead going into the fourth quarter.

 

Down the stretch, the Lady Bears had no problem finding the rim as they would expand their lead to 86-67 and would not relinquish the lead to secure the victory.

 

The Lady Bears will return to action on Monday, Feb. 1st when they travel to cross-town rival Saint Augustine's University for a makeup contest slated for 5:30 p.m. in Emery Gymansium.
