FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – After blowing a 13 point lead in the fourth quarter, the Shaw University women's basketball team successfully held off Fayetteville State University for a 68-63 win in a tight CIAA Southern Division battle on Wednesday night in Felton J. Capel Arena.
Tabatha Anderson (Manhattan Beach, CA) hauled in 17 points and seven assists, while Fantasha Tyson (Raleigh, NC) charted 14 points and Laquisha Taylor (Charlotte, NC) netted 12 points and four rebounds. Kaula Jacks (Chesapeake Beach, MD) added 10 points, while Eboni Ross (Columbia, SC) grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds, including four offensive and 13 defensive in the victory.
With the win, Shaw improves to 15-5 overall and 7-1 in the CIAA, while FSU drops to 11-10 overall and 5-5 in league standings.
The Lady Broncos got things going early with a 4-0 run before the Lady Bears finally got on the scoreboard after a contested layup from Ross at the 7:50 mark. A bucket from Taylor tied the game at 6-even before Shaw went on a 5-0 run to take their first lead of the game with 4:44 showing on the clock. By the end of the quarter the Lady Bears found themselves trailing 18-15 after FSU was able to collect six points off of second chances and their bench outscored Shaw 5-2.
Shaw trailed over the next six minutes until Tyson got hot, scoring seven points straight for the Lady Bears to tie the game at 24-all at the 5:14 mark in the second quarter. Shaw regained the lead after a 11-3 run before Doreen Richardson was able to convert on a 3-point play to tie the game at 29-even. The Lady Bears would go into the locker room tied with the Lady Broncos at 29 apiece.
At the half, Shaw shot just 27.5 percent from the field (11-40), while the Lady Broncos was able to connect 12-of-36 from the field for 33.3 percent but the Lady Bears was able to convert 13 points off of FSU's 16 turnovers.
Neither teams could find much rhythm in the second half; however, the Lady Bears would finally take the lead and eventually build a 10-point lead as they were able to outscore FSU 19-9 in the third quarter.
At the start of the final stanza, Shaw led by as many as 13 points before FSU trimmed the lead to two-points at the 2:03 mark led by Courtney Best and Vanessa Hinnant who scored 17 and nine points apiece in the quarter. Despite the Lady Broncos late rally, Shaw was able to keep their composure and come out with the win after a 7-3 run to conclude the game.
Best led all scorers with 28 points and 10 rebounds, while Hinnant tallied 13 points and five rebounds. Bria Robinson contributed 11 rebounds in the setback for FSU.
The Lady Bears will return to action on Saturday, January 30th when they host Johnson C. Smith University with a tip slated for 2 p.m. in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
