LADY BEARS FALL AT VIRGINIA UNION, 92-63

RICHMOND, Va.  – The Shaw University women's basketball team saw a 29-game win streak against Virginia Union University snap on Thursday night as the Lady Bears dropped a 92-63 decision to the Lady Panthers inside Barco-Stevens Hall.

 

The setback drops the Lady Bears to a 10-5 overall record and gives Shaw its first conference loss on the season as they fall to 2-1 in the league. Virginia Union improves to 9-1 on the season and 1-1 in CIAA action.

 

The Lady Panthers scored on the first possession of the game off a jumper from Kiana Johnson but the Lady Bears responded with a 3-pointer from Tabatha Anderson (Manhattan Beach, CA) at the 9:35 mark. VUU would take the lead back down the stretch and build a lead by as many as eight points at the 3:55 mark. Points off of turnovers and second chances allowed the Lady Panthers to lead 20-14 at the end of the first quarter.

 

The Lady Bears picked things up in the second quarter with a 4-0 run but things would also get going for VUU's Johnson as she scored 18 points consecutively for the Lady Panthers including three 3-pointers to close out the second quarter with a 49-34 lead in favor of VUU at intermission.

 

At the half, Johnson led all scorers with 32 points, while the Lady Bears' Anderson led Shaw with 12 points, including 4-of-8 from behind the arc.

 

Shaw tried to close the gap in the third quarter but VUU managed to outscore the Lady Bears 17-13 and in the fourth quarter, the Lady Panthers had built a 22-point lead to run away with the win.

 

Kaula Jacks (Chesapeake Beach, MD) led the Lady Bears in scoring with 13 points, while Anderson had 12 points and three assists and Eboni Ross (Columbia, SC) hauled in 11 points and six rebounds. Defensively, Laquisha Taylor (Charlotte, NC) grabbed 11 rebounds for Shaw.

 

For VUU, Johnson finished with a game-high 43 points, while handing out 10 assists and collecting four rebounds. Ashley Smith and Taylor White both contributed 13 points each.

 

The Lady Bears will look to recover on Saturday, Jan. 9th when they travel to Bowie State University. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
