RALEIGH, N.C. – Shaw University's Eboni Ross (Columbia, SC) scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Lady Bears women's basketball team to a 67-64 victory over the Hawks of Chowan University on Monday night inside Spaulding Gymnasium.
Chowan (7-5, 1-1 CIAA) open up first quarter with an 8-6 lead over the Lady Bears (10-4, 2-0 CIAA) but two free-throws by Michelle Wright (Baltimore, MD) tied the game at 8-all at the 5:22 mark. Shaw would build a 13-4 run to close out the quarter with a 21-12 lead.
Things kept looking bright for the Lady Bears in the second quarter as they continued to lead by double digits but the Hawks stood ground to cut at the deficit possession by possession. Although the Hawks outscored the Lady Bears for the quarter, a layup from Ross gave the Lady Bears a 37-35 advantage going into the locker room.
Ross led all scorers with 10 points, including 5-of-5 from field goal range.
Playing with pep in their step, the Lady Bears orchestrated a 9-2 run to open the third quarter in route to a 50-41 lead going into the fourth quarter.
With a 9-point lead at the 9:20 mark, Shaw maintained control of the game throughout the fourth quarter despite the Hawks efforts to get within one point twice with the last time showing eight seconds left in the game but Bryann Guyton (Richfield, MN) was able to knock down one-of-two free throws with six seconds left to put Shaw back up by two points before earning a steal off of CU's turnover to seal the deal.
Alisha Mobley tallied 20 points and seven rebounds, while Courtni Williams chipped in 11 points, five rebounds and three assists for the Hawks.
The Lady Bears return to action on Thursday, Jan. 7th when they travel to Richmond, Va., to face Virginia Union University. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
