BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Shaw University women's basketball team finished the weekend 2-0 after defeating Saint Leo University, 64-54 on Sunday afternoon to conclude the Lynn Holiday Classic. The Lady Bears hit 11-of-16 shots to rally from behind in the second half to come out with the win.
Shaw (9-3) could not find their groove early on in the first quarter after shooting 23.5 percent from the floor. Despite the slow start, the quarter ended with a tie at 10-all for both teams.
Sparked by a 3-pointer from the Lions (3-8), the Lady Bears found themselves trailing by as many as 12 points in the second quarter at the 2:02 mark. Shaw went into the locker room trailing 29-24.
The Lady Bears caught fire in the third quarter, shooting 68.8 percent from the floor to outscore the Lions 29-10 and take the lead 53-39.
Despite the Lions efforts to cut the lead to eight-points, the Lady Bears would not relinquish and would close out the game with the win.
Kaula Jacks (Chesapeake Beach, MD) led the Lady Bears with 16 points, eight rebounds and four assists. She was 6-of-11 from the field and perfect at the foul line (4-4). Michelle Wright (Baltimore, MD) and Aaliyah Mercer (Bronx, NY) each scored 11 points. Eboni Ross (Columbia, SC) grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds, while Wright collected seven.
Shaw dished out 15 assists, while scoring 36 points in the paint. The Lady Bears also out-scored Saint Leo on fast-break points, 10-0.
The Lady Bears will enjoy the holiday break and return to action on Jan. 2nd when they host Wingate University for a non-conference finale. Tip-off is schedule for 2 p.m.
