LADY BEARS ROLL PAST ELIZABETH CITY STATE, 64-46 IN CIAA OPENER

RALEIGH, N.C.  – After a week away from the court, the Shaw University women's hoops team returned to action with a 64-46 victory over the Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State University for their Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) opener. Senior Fantasha Tyson (Raleigh, NC) put up 12-points lead the Lady Bears past the Lady Vikings.

 

With the win, Shaw improves to 7-2 on the season and 1-0 in the CIAA, while Elizabeth City State falls to 2-6 on the season and 0-1 in the league.

 

Eboni Ross (Columbia, SC) added nine points and 12 rebounds, while Bryann Guyton (Richfield, MN) chipped in eight points and a game-high 14 rebounds for Shaw.

 

The Lady Bears would score on the first possession of the game after the jump ball was tipped to Kaula Jacks (Chesapeake Beach, MD) for an easy layup. From there Shaw built a 5-0 run until a bucket by ECSU's Jasmine Nixon gave the Lady Vikings its first score of the game at the 7:04 mark.

 

After two free-throws from Karen Bellamy (Bronx, NY), the Lady Bears would embark on an 8-0 run to force the Lady Vikings to call a timeout with 3:04 remaining in the first quarter as Shaw close the quarter with great momentum and a 16-3 advantage.

 

Picking up where they left off in the first quarter, SU continued to pound the ball inside to extend their lead to 22 points (30-8) with just a little under four minutes remaining. The Lady Bears held an 18-17 scoring advantage over the Lady Vikings going into the locker room with a score of 34-20.

 

In the third quarter, SU scored seven points off of ECSU turnovers and converted 4-of-6 shooting from the foul line to lead 53-25 at the end of the quarter. The Lady Bears outscored the Lady Vikings 19-5 to conclude that quarter.

 

Up by 26-points with 8:24 in the fourth quarter, the Lady Bears never allowed the Lady Vikings to get within 18 points the remainder of the game as they cruised to the win.

 

For the contest, Shaw outscored ECSU in the paint 32-20. The Lady Bears proved that one of their strengths is the team's 34 points coming from the bench. Despite 33 turnovers by SU, the Lady Bears outrebounded the Lady Vikings 66-36.

 

Shaw will continue the season on Thursday, Dec. 17th at Nova Southeastern University for a 2 p.m. tip.
