LADY BEARS OUTLAST VIRGINIA STATE 60-57 TO CONCLUDE THANKSGIVING CLASSIC

PETERSBURG, Va.  – The Shaw University women's basketball team out-rebounded the Trojans of Virginia State University 51-38 in route to a 60-57 victory to conclude the VSU Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Bears improve to 5-1 on the year, while the Trojans drop to 2-3 on the season.

With the win, the Lady Bears extend their win-streak to five games.

Both teams went scoreless for the first three minutes of the game until Kaiya Coleman (Laurel, MD) scored a layup to put the Lady Bears on the board first. The score would become tied three times in the first quarter before the Lady Bears built a five point lead to close out the quarter 17-12.

The Lady Bears opened the second quarter with an 8-0 run as the Trojans struggled offensively, missing their first seven shots. A layup from Nandi Taylor would snap the scoring drought for VSU at the 6:20 mark but it was all the Lady Bears for the rest of the quarter as they held a 14-point lead going into intermission (33-19).

VSU opened up the third quarter with a 6-2 run that would eventually cut at the Lady Bears lead to six points with 4:54 left in the quarter but SU managed to outscore the Trojans 20-16 going into the fourth.

In the final quarter, VSU continued to cut at the Lady Bears lead. With 15 seconds remaining in the game, Shaw turned the ball over that would result in a layup for the Trojans but after a couple strategic fouls from
VSU the Lady Bears was able to go to the free throw line and was able to escape Daniel Gymnasium with the win.

Michelle Wright (Baltimore, MD) led the Lady Bears with 11 points, while Tabatha Anderson (Manhattan Beach, CA) and Coleman added eight points apiece. Defensively, Eboni Ross (Columbia, SC) paced the unit with 12 rebounds, including eight defensive and four offensive.
