PETERSBURG, Va. – The Shaw University women's basketball team cruised to a 90-62 victory over the Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State University in the first day of the Virginia State University Thanksgiving Tournament on Friday afternoon. The contest was a non-conference matchup for both teams.
The Lady Bears (4-1) outscored ECSU (0-4) in all four quarters, including a 18-6 lead in the first, 21-17 advantage in the second, while posting 29 points compared to the Lady Vikings 20 points and 22-19 in the fourth quarter.
Eboni Ross (Columbia, SC) led all scorers with 30 points while grabbing 12 rebounds. Kaula Jacks (Chesapeake Beach, MD) tallied 18 points and eight assists, while Michelle Wright (Baltimore, MD) added 11 points and eight rebounds.
SU held a 26-18 advantage in points off of turnovers, 17-12 in second chances, while scoring 58 points in the paint compared to ECSU's 24.
ECSU would get on the score board first with a jumper by Mikalia Fraizer but the Lady Bears quickly responded with a bucket of their own when Ross grabbed an offensive board for an easy layup to tie the game at two apiece with 7:58 in the first quarter. The following possessions, the Lady Bears would put together a 10-1 run to lead 12-3 over the Lady Vikings in route to an 18-6 lead to end the quarter.
During the second quarter, SU continued their up-tempo style of play to extend their lead 27-15 with 6:20 left in the quarter despite the Lady Vikings effort to match the Lady Bears in points in the paint (14-14), points off of turnovers (9-9), second chances (2-2). The Lady Bears would post a 39-23 advantage at halftime.
The Lady Bears carried momentum going into the third quarter, scoring a game-high 29 points to sustain their 68-43 lead going into the fourth. SU would hold the Lady Vikings to 19 points in the final quarter to seal the win.
SU finished the game shooting 52.4 percent from the field, while the Lady Vikings shot 36.8 percent.
Shaw will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 28th to conclude the Thanksgiving Tournament against host Virginia State University. Tip is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Daniel Gymnasium.
