AUGUSTA, Ga. – Three Lady Bears posted double digits in scoring to lead the Shaw University women's basketball team to an 85-79 victory over Paine College on Wednesday night in a nonconference match up inside Heal Complex.
The Lady Bears outscored the Lady Lions 21-20 in the first, 28-17 in the second and 24-19 in the fourth to seal the hard-fought victory.
Aaliyah Mercer (Bronx, NY) led the unit with 16 points, while Laquisha Taylor (Charlotte, NC) added 15 and Kaula Jacks (Chesapeake Beach, MD) chipped in 12. Eboni Ross (Greensboro, NC) also contributed a game-high 11 rebounds in the win.
The Lady Bears finished the game with 17 steals with Mercer accounting for six and Ross with four.
Both teams shot fairly well from the free throw line as Shaw was 27-of-35, while Paine hit 16-of-19. The Lady Bears shot 50 percent from the field as compared to 47.6 percent for the Lady Lions.
Shaw won the battle on the boards by a 37-34 margin.
Paine led 34-33 at the half, scoring 20 points in the first and 24 in the second quarter.
Ashley Watts contributed 21 points and 14 assists to lead Paine. The Lady Lions shot 30-63 overall (47.6 percent) and 3-19 from 3-point range.
The Lady Bears will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 21st when they welcome Belmont Abbey College to CC Spaulding Gymnasium for a tip-off slated for 4 p.m.
