WOMEN’S BASKETBALL SUFFERS TOUGH LOSS TO CONCORD IN SEASON OPENER, 62-61

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  – The Shaw University women's basketball team opened the CIAA-MEC Challenge on Friday evening, dropping their season opener to the Lady Falcons of Fairmont State University, 62-61.

 

The Lady Bears quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter in route to an 18-16 lead heading into the second but the FSU rallied back to take the lead (20-19)at the 8:30 mark. The Lady Falcons would go on a 9-0 run to stretch their lead until SU's Tabatha Anderson (Manhattan Beach, CA) drilled a three-pointer to cut the margin (25-22) as the both teams would go into intermission tied at 32 even.

 

Both teams continued to fight in the third and fourth quarter as things got chippy down the stretch. With 1:35 left on the game clock, SU led by three but two free-throws by Makenzie White brought the Lady Falcons within one point with 12 seconds remaining.

 

A costly turnover for the Lady Bears resulted in a layup for Fairmont State to give them the 62-61 lead and victory.

 

Bryann Guyton (Richfield, MN) recorded a team-high 13 points, while Eboni Ross (Greensboro, NC) hauled in double-double 11 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Lady Bears.

 

The Lady Bears will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 14th when they square off with Concord University. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m.
