Lady Bears Overwhelm Saint Augustine's 99-53 For Seventh Straight Win

[Raleigh, NC] -  Shaw built a lead midway through the first half and never looked back, nearly breaking the century mark on their way to defeating cross-town rival Saint Augustine's 99-53.  Six Lady Bears scored in double digits with two - Kyria Buford and Aslea Williams - collecting double-doubles.

The win is the seventh straight for Shaw and they improve their record to 11-5 and 7-0 in the CIAA.  The Lady Falcons suffer only their second conference loss, falling to 5-2 in the CIAA, 10-7 overall.

"This is the game we've been looking for all season," said Shaw assistant coach Jonas Richard.  "This is the kind of intensity we've wanted.  Sometimes we've gotten it for part of the game, but this is the first time we've put two halves together and played a complete game."

He added, "When we play with this intensity, it's an exciting brand of basketball."

The Lady Bears struggled finding a shooting touch early, falling behind Saint Augustine's 10-9 in the early going.

"They were just anxious," Richard said.  "It took some time for them to settle in.  The adrenaline was flowing and there was an amazing intensity throughout the game, even before the game in the locker room."

Shaw got impressive performances not only from seniors Buford and Williams, but also from Brittany Ransom and Brittney Spencer - also seniors.

"We got great production from our seniors.  Buford had 28 points and 17 rebounds, and Aslea Williams had a double-double.  Then Brittany (Ransom) came in off the bench and gave us ten."

Buford gave the Lady Bears a 15-12 lead with a three-pointer - the first of 15 straight points that gave the Lady Bears a double-digit lead.  Buford keyed a seven-point run with another three.

With 4:43 led in the half, Ebony Spencer hit a jumper for the Lady Falcons that trimmed the Shaw lead to 17, 34-17.  The Bears then closed out the half on an 11-point run, giving them a 45-17 lead at the half.

Eight seconds into the second half, Williams hit a layup, was fouled and made the subsequent layup to give the Lady Bears a 31-point lead.  Saint Augustine's would not get within 30 the rest of the game.

With 3:36 left, Buford found Williams on the fastbreak, giving her the clear layup and giving the Lady Bears a 50-point lead.  Shaw would lead by as much as 52, but the Lady Falcons closed out the game on a 9-2 scoring run make the final score 99-53.

As a team, the Lady Bears collected 57 rebounds (to only 38 for the Lady Falcons) and dished out 18 assists.  Buford had an outstanding game in all areas of the court with 27 points, 17 rebounds, three blocks and two assists.

Williams had 12 points and 12 rebounds.  Sequoyah Griffin added 14 points, Brittney Spencer and Crystal Harris had  13 apiece while Brittany Ransom added another ten.  Spencer led Shaw with six assists.  Victoria Tanner pulled down ten rebounds.

Keyona Bryant scored 22  points for the Lady Falcons - the only player in double digits for Saint Augustine's.  She also led the team with eight rebounds.  Jolisa Williams and Scharlawn Hubbard contributed two assists apiece.

On Tuesday, the Lady Bears travel to Richmond to take on Virginia Union.  Game time is 5:30.  They return home Saturday, January 28 when they host Livingstone at 2:00 p.m.  The game is at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium on the Shaw campus.
