Poor Shooting Haunts Shaw in 73-65 Loss to Arkansas-Fort Smith

[West Palm Beach, FL] - Shaw could not find a shooting touch Sunday afternoon as the Lady Bears fell to Arkansas-Fort Smith 73-65 at the Palm Beach Atlantic Pre-Christmas Tournament at Rubin Arena. 


While the Shaw defense held the Lady Lions to only 52 shots, UA-FS sank 24 for a 46.2 percentage.  By comparison, the Lady Bears launched 65 shots, but hit only 22 for a 33.8 percentage.  From long distance, Shaw hit only six of 31 attempts (19.4 percent). 


The Lady Lions also had the advantage on the board as they pulled in 46 rebounds and held Shaw to  only 29 - only nine of which were offensive boards. 


The Lady Bears defense did force 25 Arkansas-Fort Smith turnovers - which kept the game close.


With the loss, Shaw drops to 3-3 on the season, while UA-FS improves to 6-4.


The Lady Lions opened the game with a 8-1 scoring run, and Shaw spent most of the game playing from behind.  UA-FS would increase their lead to 12 on an 8-0 run midway through the first half.  With 10:17 left in the half, Aslea Williams hit a jumper in the lane to stop the bleeding and cut the ten.


With 7:28 left in the first, Coby Hill hit a pair of free throws to give Arkansas-Fort Smith a 29-16 lead.  Shaw responded with their first sustained offensive outburst of the evening, scoring eight unanswered points.  At the 5:20 mark, Victoria Tanner hit a pair of free throws to cut the UA-FS lead to five, 29-24.


After the Lady Lions extended their lead to eight points, the Lady Bears rattled off another scoring run - this one of 11 points - to take a three-point lead, 35-32.  They would take a 35-34 lead into the locker room at the half.


UA-FS opened the second half with six straight points and regained their lead, but the Lady Bears answered with an 11-point run, taking a 48-42 lead when Shemieka Brown hit a jumper off a rebound.


The Lady Lions then took control of the game with a 17-6 scoring run, giving them a 61-54 advantage with 6:48 left in the game.  They would extend the lead to 11 points with 2:15 left in the game. 


Shaw fought back, closing the gap to six at one point, but it was too little too late as the Lady Lions claimed the 73-65 win.


Brown led the Lady Bears with 14 points.  Sequoyah Griffin added 12, Aslea Williams 11 and Victoria Tanner 10.  Tanner, Alyssa Lane and Brown had five rebounds apiece to pace Shaw while Lane and Griffin handed out four assists each.


Hill had 20 points to lead UA-FS.  Whitney Lee had 12, Chelseas Sublett had 11 and Janae' Hendreson added 10 for the Lady Lions.  Both Sublett and Lee had 11 rebounds for the double-double.  Sublett had four assists to pace Arkansas-Fort Smith.


The Lady Bears now take the next ten days off and then travel to Canyon, TX where they will take part in the West Texas Golf Cars Holiday Classic on December 29 and 30.  On the 29th, they will take on Abilene Christian at 4:00 p.m.  The next day, they take on host West Texas A&M at 6:00 p.m.
