RALEIGH, N.C. – Shaw University softball team dropped a 6-2 decision to the visiting Cavaliers of Walsh University on a rainy Tuesday afternoon at Worthdale Park. Due to inclement weather, the day's second game was cancelled.
The loss dips the Lady Bears to 3-10 overall while Walsh improves to 4-3 on the year.
The Cavaliers tacked on five runs to begin the contest, taking a 5-0 lead over Shaw after one complete inning. Shaw finally got on the scoreboard thanks to a single from sophomore McKenzie LaCount (Red Hill, GA) that brought home teammate and sophomore Destiny Beckham (Atlanta, GA) in the bottom second inning.
Down, 5-1 in the third inning, Walsh tallied a run in the top third unearned before LaCount singled again to bring home teammate and junior Karla Sosa (Brownsville, TX) to pull Shaw within four (6-2) heading into the fifth inning.
As the game progressed, the rain continued with three rain delays between the fourth and sixth innings. After the games last rain break and in the bottom sixth with one out, senior Alexandra Masnica (Chicago, IL) homered to centerfield just before the game was called as Shaw fell 6-3.
LaCount suffered the loss in the circle, allowing seven hits and striking out one batter. She also led the offensive attack for Shaw, going 2-for-2 at the plate and two RBIs.
The Lady Bears finished six hits while Walsh accounted for seven.
Shaw will return to action on Saturday, Mar. 7 at the Young Harris Tournament in Towns County, Ga. The Lady Bears will take on YHU at Saturday, Mar. 7 (DH) beginning at 10 a.m. On Sunday, Shaw will take on Georgia College also at 10 a.m. for a DH.
