RALEIGH, N.C. Shaw University softball was able to snap a five-game losing skid by earning a split with Meredith College on Thursday afternoon. The Lady Bears suffered a 9-0 loss in the first game but fought back from a 5-1 deficit in game two to edge the Avenging Angels in the nightcap.

The Lady Bears accounted for just one hit in the opener as Meredith took a 3-0 lead after one complete inning. Both teams went scoreless in the second inning but the Avenging Angels gathered three runs in the bottom third and fourth inning to run away with the victory in fifth inning.

Meredith doubled the Lady Bears hits in game one, registering 12 and nine RBI's. Shaw's lone hit came from sophomore pitcher McKenzie LaCount (Red Hill, GA) who also suffered the loss in the circle, allowing nine earned runs.

Game two would be a battle as the Lady Bears reeled off a 4-0 deficit. However, Shaw slowing chipped away at the Avenging Angels lead, scoring one run in three straight innings before Janasia Johnson (Hickory, NC) singled to bring home junior Karla Sosa (Brownsville, TX). Two batters later, Shaw's Stacia Marks' (Detroit, MI) single led to the Lady Bears scoring twice for the 6-5 lead.

With a chance to win or tie, Shaw's defense stepped up where it mattered, capturing three straight outs and the win.

Shaw tallied eight hits and charted four RBI's, led by Sosa who was 2-for-3 at the plate and two runs scored. Four different Lady Bears finished with an RBI apiece.

With the split, LaCount was also able to snap a five-game losing skid in the circle – earning her first win since Feb. 15. She allowed 12 hits and struck out four batters.

Shaw will return to action on Mar. 3 with a home doubleheader versus Walsh. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Worthdale Park.
