MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Shaw University softball team fell twice to University of Mount Olive on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader at the Nancy Chapman Cassell Field. The Lady Bears fell 11-0 in game one and 6-1 in game two, dipping its overall record to0 2-8.
During the first game, the Lady Bears tallied just one hit after 17 chances at the plate. Sophomore pitcher McKenzie LaCount (Red Hill, GA) suffered the loss in the circle, allowing 11 hits and one home run. The Trojans combined for nine runs in both the second and third inning to run away with game one's victory.
After one complete inning to start game two, both teams were scoreless until UMO took a 1-0 lead in the bottom second on an unearned run. The Trojans tacked on two more runs in the third inning as Shaw remained scoreless over the next six innings. The Lady Bears trailed 6-0 before junior Marisa Richardson (Jacksonville, FL) stole home for Shaw's lone run in the seventh but it would not be enough for a comeback.
The Lady Bears combined for four hits in game two, led by freshman Stacia Marks (Detroit, MI) who was 2-for-2 at the plate. LaCount suffered the loss, falling to 2-8 overall, allowing nine hits.
Shaw will return to action Thursday, Feb. 27 at Meredith College for a non-conference doubleheader. Game time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
