ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Shaw University softball team suffered a pair of setbacks Tuesday afternoon in non-conference play, falling 5-0 in game one and 12-4 in game two to North Carolina Wesleyan College.

The losses dips the Lady Bears record to 2-4 overall while the Battling Bishops gather their first wins of the season at 2-0.

Game 1 (Shaw, 0 – N.C. Wesleyan, 5)

In the first game, both teams went scoreless in the first inning but the Battling Bishops took a 1-0 lead in the bottom second when Emily DeAngelis scored unearned. NCW then tallied three runs in the third on two hits before plating one run in the fourth thanks to sacrifice fly that brought a team member home unearned.

Unfortunately, the Lady Bears couldn't find their groove offensively, going three and out over the next three innings before falling.

Game 2 (Shaw, 4 – N.C. Wesleyan, 12)

Shaw made things interesting in game two, taking a 2-0 lead at the top of the first inning. Senior Alexandra Masnica (Chicago, IL) doubled to bring home teammate and sophomore Destiny Beckham (Atlanta, GA), followed by a single from freshman McKenzie LaCount (Red Hill, GA) that brought home Masnica.

The Battling Bishops responded, tacking on three runs in the first and then two more in the second to go ahead 5-2 after two complete innings. Neither team scored in the third but NCW added three runs in the fourth, ignited by double from Beth Braswell.

The Lady Bears cut the deficit to eight (12-4) after producing two runs in the fifth but the Battling Bishops responded with four runs on six hits that ended the game in five innings.

LaCount suffered the losses in the circle, allowing a 21 hits total (17 in game two) and three strikeouts in a total of 10.2 innings of work. On the offensive side, LaCount did go 2-for-3 at the plate in game two with two RBI while Masnica combined for 3-of-6 hits from the plate, two runs scored and RBI.
