WILSON, N.C. – The Shaw University softball team (0-2) dropped a pair of games at Barton College on Sunday afternoon in its season opener at the Jeffries Field. The Lady Bears scored a run in four of the seven innings during game one but was unable to rally all the way back, falling to the Bulldogs 7-4 in the opener and 22-4 in five innings for the nightcap.


Game 1 (Shaw 4, Barton 7)

During game one, the Lady Bears were led by senior shortstop Alexandra Masnica (Chicago, IL) who was 2-of-3 from the plate, scoring one run and two RBI's. Shaw took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a single from senior third basemen Marisa Richardson (Jacksonville, FL) but the Bulldogs plated two runs in the bottom to take a 2-1 lead after one complete inning.

The Lady Bears found themselves trailing 5-2 in the third inning when Barton recorded three runs on three hits capped off by a single from Lindsey Massengill. Shaw scored two more times, but it would not be enough in the seventh as the Bulldogs scored twice unearned in the bottom fifth to seal the win over Shaw.

Freshman pitcher McKenzie LaCount (Redhill, GA) suffered the setback, allowing eight hits and striking out three.


Game 2 (Shaw 4, Barton 22)

Barton put the game away early in the nightcap with a 13-1 first running, aided by 10 errors from the Lady Bears that also led to 17 unearned runsSophomore centerfielder Destiny Beckham (Stone Mountain, GA) went 1-for-2 at the plate, scoring two runs while collecting two stolen bases. LaCount suffered the loss in the circle, allowing 15 hits and striking out two batters.

The Lady Bears will return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 11 with a single game against William Peace. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. at Worthdale Park.
