RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University softball team fell twice to Fayetteville State University in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Lamon Street Park.
The losses dips the Lady Bears to 3-19 overall and 3-13 in the CIAA while FSU improved to 5-23 on the year and 5-9 in league action.
Collectively, Shaw tallied 15 total hits led by senior Kiana Rogers who went 4-of-6 from the plate and an RBI.
In the opening contest, Shaw came from behind to take a 2-1 lead over the Lady Broncos in the top of fifth thanks to two fielder's choices. FSU responded with two runs of its own in the bottom to regain the lead (3-2). The Lady Bears added on one more run but it would not be enough as the Lady Broncos secured three runs in the bottom sixth in route to the 6-3 win.
Shaw led 2-1 to start game two of the doubleheader after earning three hits. FSU knotted the game up at 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning but both teams would hold each other scoreless over the next four innings.
A fielder's choice provided the Lady Bears with a run scored in the top of the eight but the Lady Broncos took advantage of Shaw's miscues, scoring two unearned runs for the come behind win.
Freshman Joan Wendt (Jacksonville, NC) suffered the two losses in the circle for Shaw, posting a 3-19 overall record as the lone pitcher.
Shaw will look to close out the 2019 season with a road doubleheader at Winston-Salem State on Tuesday, Apr. 23 beginning at 2 p.m.
