RALEIGH, N.C. – Shaw University softball dropped a pair of Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division contests to the visiting Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls (6-10, 6-5 CIAA) Thursday afternoon at Worthdale Park. The Lady Bears fell 14-5 in the opener and 14-4 in the nightcap.
The Lady Bears (3-9, 3-7 CIAA) hung in tight with the Golden Bulls during game one after plating four runs in the second inning to take a 4-3 stand but JCSU added three runs on two hits in the fourth led by single from Evelyn Arguelles that regained the lead over Shaw.
The Golden Bulls capitalized on Shaw's miscues in the sixth inning to groom a 10-4 run, the Lady Bears tallied one run on a single from senior Kiana Rogers (Fort Atkinson, WI) but the Lady Bears would not overcome JCSU's relentless hitting as the Golden Bulls added on four more runs in the seventh to own a 14-5 final.
In game two, the Lady Bears saw a shortfall of 11 before gathering its first run on a double from Masnica to bring home freshman Victoria Ortiz (Tucson, AZ). With such a large deficit early on, Shaw was never able to find a groove offensively and as a result, the Lady Bears fell 14-4 after scoring two runs in the fourth while JCSU registered three in the top fifth for the five run rule.
Rogers went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Lady Bears with an RBI while Wendt suffered her second loss on the day, allowing 19 hits and walking three.
The Lady Bears will return to action Saturday, Apr. 6 at Saint Augustine's University for a CIAA division doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at Lions Park.
