RALEIGH, N.C.  –The Shaw University women's softball team earned its first doubleheader sweep of the season with a pair of home victories of Livingstone College on Saturday afternoon at Worthdale Park. The Lady Bears took game one 16-3 and won 9-0 in the night cap, both in five innings in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division action.

Shaw (3-7, 3-5 CIAA) caught fire in the opening contest, grooming an 8-0 lead that featured five singles and six RBI's. Livingstone cut the Lady Bears lead to six after scoring two runs in the second inning but Shaw responded with a run of its own after a single from freshman Joan Wendt (Jacksonville, NC) that drove freshman teammate Timia Thompson (Richmond, VA) home and the Lady Bears went ahead 9-2 after two complete innings.

LC (0-16, 0-8 CIAA) plated one more run on a passed ball but the Lady Bears were able to pick up three runs on two hits to take a 12-3 charge heading into the fourth inning.

After three quick defensive stops, Shaw's offensive momentum soared when senior Taija Bailey (Greensboro, NC) singled to centerfield allowing freshman Victoria Ortiz (Tucson, AZ) to score while junior Karla Sosa (Brownsville, TX) followed to add to the Lady Bears score. Senior Christine Ngeve doubled, earning two RBI's that would seal the deal for the Lady Bears as they plastered a total of four runs in the bottom fifth in route to the five-inning run-rule.

Freshman Joan Wendt (Jacksonville, NC) collected her second win of the season on the mound, allowing two earned runs, four hits while striking out five against 25 batters faced.

Shaw opened up a 6-0 lead in the first inning of game two after Bailey doubled to right center. Wendt singled for two RBI's and eventually scored the Lady Bears sixth run on a passed ball.

The Lady Bears plated three more runs in the bottom third capped off by a double from senior Raquel Kellow (Conroe, TX) to come away with the day's second win. Bailey went 2of-2 at the plate while Sosa and Wendt paced Shaw with two RBI's. Wendt collected her third win of the season, striking out two and allowing one hit in five innings of work.

Due upcoming inclement weather, tomorrow's doubleheader against Johnson C. Smith has been rescheduled for Thursday, Apr. 4 at 1 p.m. Shaw will return to action Wednesday, Apr. 3 in another home doubleheader against Mount Olive. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at Worthdale Park.
