ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Shaw University softball dropped a 9-4 decision to Elizabeth City State University during the first day of the 2019 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-Up at the South Park Athletic Complex Friday afternoon.
The loss dips the Lady Bears (1-2) to 0-1 in the CIAA while ECSU (1-10) claimed its first conference win of the year for a 1-2 mark in league action.
Senior Alex Masnica (Chicago, IL) paced the Lady Bears offensively, going 2-4 at the plate with two RBI's, one run and her first homer of the season. As a unit, Shaw was tallied eight hits compared to the Lady Vikings who charted 12 including four hits in the top of the seventh.
ECSU took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a double from Cheyanne Brasseur but the Lady Bears responded with a single from freshman Timia Thompson (Richmond, VA) that allowed senior Kiana Rogers (Fort Atkinson, WI) to come home and tie the game at 1-1 after two innings.
A home run to the left side from Masnica provided a 2-1 lead for Shaw but the Lady Bears would go scoreless over the next two innings as ECSU was able to rally three runs in the top of the fifth to regain a lead (4-2) over Shaw.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Rogers scored her second run of the day on a sacrifice from Thompson to close the gap to 4-3 but the Lady Vikings used a big seventh inning to pull away from Shaw with the five runs scored.
Freshman Joan Wendt (Jacksonville, NC) falls to 0-3 at the mound, tossing seven innings allowing three earned runs and two strikeouts.
The Lady Bears will have three games Saturday, starting with Bowie State at 10 a.m., Virginia State at 12:15 p.m. and then Virginia Union at 4:45 p.m.
