SALEM, Va. – A complete team total domination by the Shaw University softball team provided a 14-4 victory over Bowie State University (14-19) day two of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Softball Championship Tuesday afternoon at Moyer Park. The Lady Bears put together 13 total hits and 13 RBI in route to the commanding win as SU fights to continue playing in the 2018 Softball Conference Tournament.
With the victory, Shaw (12-19) will clash with No. 2 seed, Fayetteville State (13-24) in a consolation game scheduled to begin today at 2:30 p.m. The winner of the contest will move on to face the winner of Winston-Salem State and Chowan at 5 p.m. this evening.
In the first inning, Shaw tallied five runs on three hits including a double from senior Sheniqua Fahie (British Virgin Islands) and a single from both junior Kiana Rogers (Fort Atkinson, WI) and senior Tori Hale (Moreno Valley, CA). The Bulldogs then earned a run on a walk as bases were loaded but the Lady Bears took a 5-1 lead after one complete inning.
Shaw scored one run in the top of the second on a fielder's choice as sophomore Amanda Ortiz (Tucson, AZ) reached home to extend its lead 6-1. The Lady Bears kept its pace going in the third inning, driving in two runs on four hits to stretch its lead 8-1.
The Lady Bears capitalized on six runs in the top of the fourth that featured a grand slam from Rogers, two RBI from Hale and Lewis and an RBI from Fahie but the Bulldogs grinded out three runs, including a homer from
Nicoleen Ochoa that trimmed Shaw's lead 14-4 in the bottom. However, Shaw's tremendous defense and better offense allowed the Lady Bears to cruise to the five-run rule.
Rogers led the offense attack with two RBI and three runs scored, going 3-of-4 at the plate. Hale went 2-2 with a game-high five RBI and one run scored while Ortiz went 2-3 with three runs in the win.
