SALEM, Va. – The Shaw University softball team fell 9-1 to the undefeated Chowan University Hawks during the 2018 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Softball Championships Monday afternoon. With the loss, the Lady Bears fall into the loser's bracket and will have to face Virginia State University at 7:30 p.m. on Field 3 in the elimination game.
The Lady Bears were outhit 11-4 as the loss dips SU to 10-19 overall and the Hawks improve to 28-14.
Shaw hung tight with Chowan after two complete innings as both teams did not score until the bottom of the third when the Hawks tallied four runs to take a 4-0 lead after three innings.
In the bottom of the fourth, CU scored two runs on three hits to extend its lead 6-0 over Shaw but in the top of the fifth, the Lady Bears finally got on the scoreboard after a fielding error from right field that allowed sophomore Amanda Ortiz (Tucson, AZ) to score.
Chowan would respond with a home run from EmaRae Flores to start the bottom of the fifth and from there, the Hawks would not look back, adding two more runs in the sixth inning that would ultimatley seal the game win over Shaw in sixth innings of play.
Senior Frances Perry (Burlington, NJ) went 2-for-2 at the plate while Ortiz and redshirt sophomore Taija Bailey (Greensboro, NC) finished with one hit apiece. Senior Sheniqua Fahie (British Virgin Island) suffered the loss in the circle, she allowed eight earned runs, walked five and struck out two batters in 5.1 innings of work.
