CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For the first time in seven years, the Shaw University softball team will have the chance to participate in the 2018 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Softball Championship beginning on Monday, Apr. 30 – Tuesday, May, 2 at the Moyer Park in Salem, Va.
Shaw finished the regular season with a 10-18 overall record but most importantly, the Lady Bears wrapped up the division and conference play with a 4-6 mark and 8-8 stance which snapped that seven year drought of not making it to postseason play. The last time the Lady Bears made it to the softball championship was in 2011.
The CIAA announced the 2018 Softball Championship Bracket with the Lady Bears as the No. 4 seed of the Southern Division. Shaw will face the Hawks of Chowan, the No. 1 seed of the North in the first round. Chowan, the Northern Division Champions, went 10-0 this year against division opponents and owned an impeccable record of 16-0 in the CIAA.
Shaw and Chowan first round tilt will begin at 2:30 p.m. This will be the second meeting between both squads this year as the Hawks defeated the Lady Bears 10-0 back on Mar. 17 during the CIAA Softball Round-Up in Elizabeth City, N.C.
The Championship Consolation Round will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Monday with the loser of the SAU/BSU game versus the loser of the VUU/WSSU contest. The final game of opening day will be a consolation contest between the loser of the FSU/VSU game versus the loser of CU/SU.
The double elimination tournament will continue into Tuesday with two 12:00 p.m. and two 2:30 p.m. games. The final game of Day 2 is slated for 5:00 p.m.
Moyer Park is located on 1000 Union Street, Salem, Va. 24153. Championship finals will be played on Wednesday, May 2nd at 3:30 p.m. at Moyer Park. If a tiebreaker situation exists the ultimate elimination game will begin 30 minutes following the tie.
