RALEIGH, N.C. – After a quick turnaround from Saturday's doubleheader, the Shaw University softball team dropped two games to the visiting Winston-Salem State University Rams on Sunday afternoon. The Lady Bears fell 6-4 and 13-1 to the Rams at Worthdale Park.
Shaw closes out the regular season 10-18 overall and 8-8 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), and tie with Johnson C. Smith in the division standings with a 4-6 mark in the Southern Division.
Despite the setbacks, the Lady Bears earn a berth in the 2018 CIAA Softball Tournament – first time in seven years due to its 8-8 mark in the league. The Rams finish 9-24, 7-7 CIAA and 4-4 in the South for third place.
Both teams opened up the first inning with a pair of doubles that evened the score at 2-2. The Rams singled to centerfield that led to two more runs in the second inning before capitalizing on a miscue to add one more run for the 5-2 lead heading into the bottom fourth.
Senior Tori Hale (Moreno Valley, CA) got things going with a double to right field. Hale would score on a throwing error from the Rams. After a single from senior Zahrea Lewis (Savannah, GA), sophomore Amanda Ortiz (Tucson, AZ) scored that would pull the Lady Bears within 5-4 after four complete innings.
A double from Kortney Thomas gave the Rams a 6-4 lead as Shaw would be unable to match, leaving two runner left on.
Junior Kiana Rogers (Fort Atkinson, WI) led the efforts in game one with a 3-4 performance and two RBI. Senior Sheniqua Fahie (British Virgin Island) suffered the loss, allowing six earned runs, walking two and striking out two.
In the second game, WSSU scored the game's first run in the top of the second that eventually led to a total of six runs on four hits that provided the Rams with a 6-0 lead over Shaw heading into the bottom of the inning. The Lady Bears it's only run of the tilt when Rogers scored on an error from WSSU. The Rams drilled six more runs in the fourth and from there, Shaw was never able to recover as the Rams tallied one more in the fifth to walk away with the win.
Four different Lady Bears registered a hit but Shaw was outhit 18-4 against the Rams. Senior Frances Perry (Burlington, NJ) took the loss, striking out just one batter.
The 2018 CIAA Softball Championships will begin Apr. 30 – May 3 in Salem, Va. The Lady Bears will await the seeing of the tournament.
