RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University softball team dropped a pair of home games to the visiting Fayetteville State University Lady Broncos (11-21, 10-4 CIAA, 7-1 South) Saturday afternoon at Worthdale Park. The Lady Bears fell 8-4 and 10-2 to a hot FSU team. Today's doubleheader was the first time this season, SU was swept by a division opponent.
Shaw (10-16, 8-6 CIAA, 4-4 South) recorded 12 hits and scored six runs in both games combined. The Lady Bears offense was led by junior Kiana Rogers (Fort Atkinson, WI) who finished 3-for-6. She tallied an RBI and one run in the day's second game.
In the circle, senior Frances Perry (Burlington, NJ) took the loss in game one, giving up six earned runs and striking out three. Sophomore Amanda Ortiz (Tucson, AZ) gave up nine runs and struck out two.
Shaw held a 1-0 lead after two complete innings but the Lady Broncos scored three runs in third with bases loaded on a double from Madison Mendoza, giving FSU a 3-1 advantage heading into the fourth inning. FSU added one in the next inning before drilling four runs the top of the fifth inning to go ahead 8-1 over Shaw.
Throughout the season, the Lady Bears have made heroic comebacks late in the contest and in the bottom of the sixth it would be no different but unfortunately, Shaw's effort came up short as the Lady Bears scored three runs on four hits and it wasn't enough in game one.
Game two was equally close after the first inning but FSU strung together three runs in the second and then four runs in the third, combining for six hits total to lead 10-2 over Shaw. Shaw went completely cold on the offensive tip and the Lady Broncos scored one more in the top of the fifth as the Lady Bears fell in five innings.
Shaw will return to action on Sunday, Apr. 22 for their regular season finale against Winston-Salem State University at Worthdale Park for Senior Day. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
