BAILEY NAMED CIAA SOFTBALL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Redshirt-sophomore Taija Bailey (Greensboro, NC) of the Shaw University softball team was named Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her performance last weekend, the CIAA office announced Wednesday morning.

Bailey helped lead the Lady Bears to a split as they hosted the Lady Falcons of Saint Augustine's in CIAA Showdown at Worthdale Park. Overall the sophomore had one of her best games of her career on both ends of the field against a power hitting Saint Augustine's team Saturday. Defensively, Bailey recorded nine putouts (1.000 fielding percentage) between center field and right field. She was 4-of-4 in game one and 5-of-5 in game two.

So far in 2018, the Lady Bears outfielder has recorded 24-26 putouts (sixth on the team) for a fielding percentage of .923.

For the Shaw softball program, Bailey's selection is a second as part of the CIAA Conference.

Shaw (10-14, 8-4 CIAA, 4-2 South) will conclude the regular season with two doubleheaders at home, first with Fayetteville State on Saturday, Apr. 21 and then on Sunday, Apr. 22 versus Winston-Salem State for senior day. Both games are at Worthdale Park with start time scheduled for 1 p.m.
