SOFTBALL FINISHES 2-0 TO CONCLUDE CONFERENCE ROUNDUP

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. Shaw University softball closed out the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Roundup 2-0 after picking up a 4-3 win over Bowie State in the days first game and capping off the weekend with a dominating 17-5 victory against Virginia Union on Sunday, Mar. 18 at the South Park Sports Complex.

 

The two victories put the Lady Bears (6-13) 4-2 in league action, good for second in the Southern Division tied alongside Saint Augustine's.

 

In game one, Bowie State and Shaw were tied after one inning. The Lady Bears picked up one run in the bottom of the second when senior Brittany Kline (Choctaw Beach, FL) singled to left field allowing senior Erica Kiessling (Fuquay-Varina, NC) who reached on an error to score.

 

Shaw plated two more runs in the fifth, taking a 4-1 lead heading into the top of the sixth but BSU scored on a that trimmed the Lady Bears lead 4-2. The Bulldogs pulled within one (4-3) in the top of the seventh but Shaw's defense held them after securing three-straight outs for the win.

 

Senior Sheniqua Fahie (British Virgin Island) led the offensive attack in game one, going 2-of-3 with one run scored while senior Zahrea Lewis (Savannah, GA) went 1-of-3 with two RBI and one run. She hit a homerun in the contest, her first of the season.

 

Fahie alson won her second game of the season in the circle, she allowed seven hits, walked four and struck out three in seven innings of work.

 

Against Virginia Union, Shaw ballooned to a 7-1 command after two complete innings. The Lady Bears then scored a week-high seven runs in the top of the fourth led by a single from sophomore Taija Bailey (Greensboro, NC) that scored Kline. That inning would feature four RBI in that segment while six different players scored a run.

 

VUU added two to the scoreboard but the Lady Bears continued to dominate offensively, producing three runs in the top of the fifth that ultimately sealed the win in five with the score 17-5 in favor of Shaw. The nightcap was the most points the Lady Bears have scored in a game this season at 17 and they also recorded a season-best 18 hits and just one error for the game.

 

Junior Christine Ngeve (Greensboro, NC) led the ball charge with four RBI, four runs scored while going 2-of-4 at the plate while Fahie tallied four runs, two RBI and was 3-for-4 at bat. Lewis finished with three RBI on 3-of-5 hitting.

Senior Frances Perry (Burlington, NJ) picked up her third win, striking out one and walking one in five innings.

 

Shaw will return to action on Apr. 7 at Livingstone College for a doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m. The games will be the division opener for both teams.
