ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – In their first two games of Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) action, the Shaw University women's softball team fell 9-1 to Virginia State (5-10, 2-0 CIAA) in the opening game but bounced back in stellar fashion to defeat Lincoln (Pa.) (0-3, 0-2 CIAA) 13-1 on Friday afternoon at the South Park Sports Complex.
The split moved Shaw to 3-11 overall on the season and 1-1 in league action.
Five different players tallied a hit in the first game, including a double from senior second baseman Brittany Kline (Choctaw Beach, FL) and senior catcher Sheniqua Fahie (British Virgin Island) and an RBI from junior outfielder Kiana Rogers (Fort Atkinson, WI).
Senior pitcher Frances Perry (Burlington, NJ) suffered the loss in the circle, allowing eight hits, eight runs, walking two and striking out one.
The Lady Bears led 1-0 after one inning but VSU scattered four runs in the top of the second that featured three runs that were unearned. Offensively, Shaw could not find their groove through four innings as they failed to match the Trojans who charted four more in the third and one in the fifth.
The Lady Bears sought revenge against Lincoln (Pa.) by scoring a season-high nine runs in the first inning. With a 9-0 lead after two innings, Shaw never looked back despite the Lady Lions plating one in the top of the third. The Lady Bears tallied one in the bottom of the third and three in the fourth in route to the 13-1 victory.
Sophomore pitcher/outfielder Amanda Ortiz (Tucson, AZ) went 3-of-4 with two runs scored while Rogers finished 2-of-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Kline went 2-for-3, two RBI and one run, following sophomore Taija Bailey (Greensboro, NC) who went 2-for-3 with a career-high three RBI and two runs scored. Senior Tori Hale (Moreno Valley, CA) would round out good hitting for Shaw, tallying two runs and two RBI on 2-of-3 hitting.
Ortiz scampered just three hits to gain the win in the circle for her first win of the season.
The Lady Bears will return to action on Saturday, Mar. 17 with a game against Elizabeth City State (10 a.m.) and Chowan (2 p.m.).
