RALEIGH, N.C. – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Softball Round-up will begin Friday, Mar. 16 through Sunday, Mar. 18, as the Shaw University softball team will compete against teams from the Northern Division in Elizabeth City, N.C. hosted by Elizabeth City State University at the South Park Sports Complex (110 Capital Trace, Elizabeth City, N.C. 27909).
The Lady Bears open the round up against Virginia State (3-10) at 12 noon on Friday, followed by a meeting with Lincoln (Pa.) (0-1) at 2 p.m. On Saturday, Shaw will take on ECSU (0-14) at 10 a.m. and then turn around to play Chowan (11-8) at 2 p.m. to conclude day two of the round up.
On the final day, the Lady Bears and Bowie State (1-4) will go head-to-head at 9 a.m., and then Shaw will conclude cross division play with an 11 a.m. tilt against Virginia Union (1-3).
Shaw (2-10) enters the weekend after competing in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic where the Lady Bears went 1-4 during the tournament. Offensively, senior first baseman Zahrea Lewis (Savannah, GA) leads the charge with a .296 batting average to go along with eight hits, seven RBI and four runs scored. Junior shortstop Christine Ngeve (Greensboro, NC) caught fire earlier this week, hitting .281 at the plate with nine hits, a team-high eight RBI, three runs scored, two doubles and one triple.
Junior catcher/outfield Kiana Rogers (Fort Atkinson, WI) has also been a bright spot for the Lady Bears, hitting .280 with seven hits, six RBI, one triple and double.
