LAURINBURG, N.C. – Shaw University softball fell in a pair of games to St. Andrews College on Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Bears fall to 0-6 on the season while the Knights improve to 12-6 overall.
The Knights took game on from Shaw, 5-4 in seven innings before completing the sweep with a 11-3 victory in the nightcap.
In game one, both teams opened up the contest with a pair of run in the first inning. The Lady Bears took a 3-2 lead in the second inning but the Knights rebounded to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth as the score showed 3-3. Shaw made the score 4-3 in the fifth and would hold on that lead in the six but SAU plated two that would secure the win over the Lady Bears.
Shaw tallied a season-high eight hits led by both senior Sheniqua Fahie (British Virgin Islands) and junior Kiana Rogers (Fort Atkinson, WI) whom finished with two hits apiece. Rogers also recorded two RBI in the loss. Sophomore Amanda Ortiz (Tuscan, AZ) suffered the loss on the mound, tossing one strikeout but allowing five runs and committing four errors in six innings of work.
The Lady Bears led 3-0 heading into the bottom of the first inning in game two but SAU quickly replied with three of their own to knot the contest at 3-3. Shaw's offensive momentum would decrease as the Lady Bears would remain scoreless for the remainder of the way and the Knights adding three in the third and two in the fifth inning.
Senior Brittany Kline (Choctaw Beach, FL) registered one of the Lady Bears three total hits in the game and two RBI. Fahie took the loss in the circle in two innings, she allowed six runs and was responsible for six errors while senior Frances Perry (Burlington, NJ) tossed 2.1 innings in relief and allowed five runs off nine hits with no strikeouts.
Shaw will return to action March 9-10 as they host their annual Softball Challenge in Cary, N.C.
