LADY BEARS SUFFER SWEEP TO FAYETTEVILLE STATE

RALEIGH, NC – The Shaw University softball team dropped a pair of home CIAA Southern Division contests to visiting Fayetteville State University by scores of 13-5 and 10-0 Saturday in a doubleheader that was played at Walnut Creek Softball Complex.

 

Shaw will wrap up the 2016 season with a home doubleheader also at Walnut Creek Softball Complex on Sunday, April 24 as the Lady Bears host Winston-Salem State at 1 p.m.

 

After FSU registered four runs in the top of the first inning to take a 4-0 lead in game one, the Lady Bears got on the board with one run as Zahrea Lewis (Savannah, GA) notched a RBI double.

 

In the second inning, the Lady Broncos plated three more runs before its biggest inning came in the top of the fifth when FSU racked up five runs to take a 13-5 advantage. The Lady Bears would score four runs in the bottom of the second on a single from Chakiryn Jackson (Goochland, VA), followed by a double from Lewis and then a FSU error which cut the lead to 7-5.

 

FSU scored one run in the top of the fourth before the big fifth inning as the Lady Bears would not be able to overcome the deficit in the bottom of the fifth.

 

In addition to Jackson's three hits, Lewis, Kline and France Perry all tallied two hits in the contest, while Lewis led the team with 3 RBI. Chynna Gross (Orange Park, FL) suffered the loss at the mound as she pitched 5.0 innings (11 hits, 12 ER, 4 BB and no strike outs).

 

In game two, FSU tallied six runs in the top of the first inning and then padded their lead with four in the third that gave the Lady Broncos the advantage that was good enough to close out the game after a 1-2-3 in the bottom of the fifth as the Lady Bears went scoreless to suffer the setback.

Frances Perry (Hamilton, NJ) took the loss as she allowed 12 hits, 8 ER, 1 BB and 4 strikeouts in five innings pitched.
