RALEIGH, NC – The Shaw University softball team dropped a doubleheader to cross-town rival Saint Augustine's Saturday afternoon for a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division matchup at Worthdale Park. The Lady Bears fell 8-0 in both contests.
The loss drops the Lady Bears to 9-26 overall and 4-8 in the CIAA, while the Lady Falcons post a 7-19 mark overall and 6-6 in the league.
The opening contest, SAU scored two runs in the top of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead over Shaw. The Lady Bears failed to capitalize on opportunities to match the Lady Falcons scoring in the bottom of the second as SAU mounted four runs in the top of the third led by a single from Tyanna Petersen that allowed Meranda Zanni to score. The Lady Falcons accounted for four hits in the inning with only one run unearned.
Unable to find rhythm in the contest, the Lady Bears would suffer the 8-0 setback when SAU added two more runs in the top of the fifth to seal the deal.
In game two, a single from Korey Hill and Peterson gave the Lady Falcons the early 1-0 lead over Shaw. SAU tallied two more runs in the third, before adding three in the fourth.
Despite attempts to stay alive from the Lady Bears, the Lady Falcons' defense was able to get out of the fifth and sixth inning and ultimately earn the 8-0 shutout.
Shaw will look to bounce back with a home contest on Saturday, April 23 versus Fayetteville State University at Walnut Creek Softball Complex. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
