DENMARK, SC – The Shaw University softball team defeated Voorhees College 17-1 and 19-1 in five innings Thursday afternoon. The Lady Bears improve to 6-19 after the two wins.


The Lady Bears bats were hot Thursday as Shaw made 14 hits in the win over the Lady Tigers in game one and followed up that performance with 17 hits in the night cap.


In the opening contest, Shaw scored its first of seven runs after Zahrea Lewis (Savannah, GA) singled to bring teammates Chakiryn Jackson (Goochland, VA) and Brittany Kline (Choctaw Beach, FL) home.


VC managed to score one run in the bottom of the first off a miscue from the Lady Bears but Shaw added two runs in the second and five in the top of the third inning.


The Lady Bears combined for three runs, one in the fourth and two in the fifth to seal the 17-1 victory.


Jackson and Christine-Evette Ngeve (Greensboro, NC) led Shaw at the plate with three hits, two RBI. Ngeve finished with a team-best three runs scored, while Jackson tallied two runs.


Chynna Gross (Orange Park, FL) earned the win for the Lady Bears in five innings of work. She allowed four hits, one run and struck out nine.


Shaw scored four runs, including a single from Ngeve and a double from Kiana Rogers (Fort Atkinson, WI) to give the Lady Bears a 4-0 lead to open up game two.


The Lady Bears plated two more runs in the top of the second before the Voorhees scored off a passed ball. Shaw added one run in the fourth before charting a season-high 10 runs in the fourth led by a triple from Jackson that brought Kline home. Five different Lady Bears scored in the inning, including two from Kline and Jackson each.


Shaw tallied two runs in the top of the fifth to secure the 17-1 win.


In the circle, Frances Perry (Hamilton, NJ) picked up the win. She allowed two hits one run and struck out eight in five innings pitched.


Lewis led the Lady Bears on the bats as she hit her first career home run, scoring two runs and four RBI. Kline finished four runs scored and two hits.


Shaw will return to action on Wednesday, March 30 when they host Claflin in a non-conference doubleheader at Walnut Creek Softball Complex. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
