RALEIGH, NC. – The Shaw University women's softball squad hung in close with Chowan University but was unable to keep pace with the Hawks for day two of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Softball Round-Up, falling 5-1 on Saturday at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex.
Neither teams scored over the course of four innings but a triple by Rachell Clark scored teammate Kris Neal to give the Hawks (15-12, 4-0 CIAA) the first run of the game in the fifth inning. Tina White would then earn a single that would allow Clark to score and a ground out to shortstop produced another run for CU as the Lady Bears trailed 3-0 heading into the bottom of the inning.
Shaw (4-17, 1-3 CIAA) attempted to match the Hawks as Chakiryn Jackson (Goochland, VA) hit a single and would eventually steal second base before a single from Christine-Evette Ngeve (Greensboro, NC) gave the Lady Bears their first run of the game. However, that would be only run the Lady Bears would score after Kiana Rogers (Fort Atkinson, WI) flied out to first baseman for SU's third out.
Chynna Gross (Orange Park, FL) suffered the loss, striking out six in seven innings of work while Delanie Winslow earned the complete game win, fanning 12 batters.
Shaw will conclude the round-up with a matchup against Bowie State at 11 a.m. and Virginia Union at 1 p.m. at Walnut Creek Softball Complex.
