RALEIGH, NC. – The Shaw University women's softball team finished day one of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Softball Round-Up with a 1-3 record after losing to Virginia State 11-1 and defeating Lincoln 18-8 but falling 14-4 to Elizabeth City State at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex.
In game one, VSU scored eight runs in the first inning to take an 8-0 lead over Shaw but neither teams would score over the next two innings until the Lady Bears finally got on the scoreboard on an unearned run from Zahrea Lewis (Savannah, GA).
The Trojans would respond in the bottom of the fourth when Alexandra King singled to shortstop, following another single from Dominique Mulero and an error from Shaw to score King. VSU would plate two more runs in the inning to take the 11-1 victory in five innings.
Coming off a loss to VSU, the Lady Bears rejuvenated themselves against Lincoln in game two. Shaw scored eight runs off of five hits in first inning led by a double from Brittany Kline (Choctaw Beach, FL). SU added one more run in the second but LU managed to claw its way back in the contest after a double from Diamond Scott, scoring eight runs total in the top of the third inning.
With a one-point lead (9-8), Kiana Rogers (Fort Atkinson, WI) and Kline got walked and Rogers eventually scored on a wild pitch. The Lady Bears tallied seven more runs, answering LU's eight in the top to stretch its lead 17-8 heading into the fourth. A sacrifice fly from Lewis brought home Tiffany Brooks (Efland, NC) for the game's last scored run as the Lady Bears secured the 18-8 win for its first conference win on the season.
Looking to carry momentum into the final game on the day, Shaw took an early 2-0 lead over ECSU but the Vikings responded after Morgan Howell singled to right field to plate Kayley Surrento who had reached base on an error.
From there, the Lady Vikings bats got hot when Casey Cartwright hit a double to bring home teammate Howell. Six runs later, ECSU held an 8-2 lead over Shaw going into the second inning.
The Lady Bears hung in the game with one run scored each in the third and fourth inning; however, the Lady Vikings bats came alive in the bottom of the fifth as ECSU totaled six to score six runs to put the contest out of reach for Shaw. The Lady Bears would fall 14-4 after just three hits compared to ECSU's 14 for the contest.
On the mound, Frances Perry (Hamilton, NJ) went 0-2 for the day. She allowed 28 hits, walking two and striking out four in 10 innings pitched. Chynna Gross (Orange Park, FL) finished 1-0 with the win against Lincoln. She allowed six hits and walks but struck out four in five innings.
With possible inclement weather on the horizon for Saturday, Shaw will face Chowan at 10 a.m.
