RALEIGH, NC – The Shaw University softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader to Mansfield University Wednesday afternoon at Walnut Creek Softball Complex. The Lady Bears fell 11-0 in the first game and 14-0 in the second.

In the first game, Shaw (2-13) allowed the Mountaineers to score two runs to open up the contest, including a home run by Rachael Sterner to give Mansfield the early 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Plagued by errors and unable to get anything going offensively, the Lady Bears saw a 2-0 lead from the Mountaineers balloon to 6-0 at the top of the second, followed by three more runs in the third before plating two additional runs in the fourth.

Shaw would not be able to overcome the large deficit in the third inning, falling 11-0 in game one to Mansfield. Frances Perry (Hamilton, NJ) took the loss on the mound. She pitched five innings, allowing 10 hits, 11 runs, walking six and striking out one batter on the day.

Despite a 3-0 lead in the final game of the day, Shaw showed some life in the bottom of the second inning when Christine-Evette Ngeve (Greensboro, NC) singled to centerfield, following a Tiffany Brooks' (Efland, NC) single to left field.

With runners on first and second, Shaw's chances of getting a run would be cut short after two strikeouts and a pop up to first base to conclude the inning.

The Mountaineers would plate six runs in the top of the third and add four more in the fourth to put a cap on the 14-0 win in five innings played over Shaw. Chynna Gross (Orange Park, FL) was credited for the loss in the circle. She allowed 11 hits, 14 runs and walked six in three innings pitched.

Shaw will return to action on Sunday, March 13 when they host St. Andrews in a doubleheader at Worthdale Park. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
