RALEIGH, N.C. – The young Shaw University softball team suffered a tough pair of non-conference losses to Meredith College Thursday afternoon. The Lady Bears (2-4) dropped game one 14-1 and capped off the day with a seven-inning 5-0 loss.
Plagued with a sluggish performance offensively throughout the day, Shaw's one hit to the Avenging Angels 15 in the opening game was not enough to overcome the missteps. Down 3-0 heading into the top of the fourth, Mackenzi Badger (Kalama, WA) reached first base on an error and would advance to second on another error before scoring an unearned run for the Lady Bears only run of the day.
The bottom of the third, Meredith (2-0) pounded 10 runs to close out the inning and Shaw failed to respond.
Neither teams produced a run in the first two innings of game two, but a home run from Brittany Bucklin gave Meredith the first score of the contest, followed by Charley Cox's single to right center to bring teammate Sarah Watson home as the Avenging Angles led 2-0 heading into the fourth.
The Lady Bears went scoreless for the remainder of the contest as Meredith scored one run in the fourth and two more in fifth that would eventually seal the deal.
Shaw will return to the field on Saturday, Feb. 20th with the hopes of getting back into the winning column when they host Davis & Elkins University. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
