SOFTBALL FALLS IN DOUBLEHEADER AT CLAFLIN

ORANGEBURG, N.C.  – The Shaw University women's softball team lost a pair of non-conference games at The Claflin University on Tuesday, falling by scores of 9-0 and 21-1. The Lady Bears had a total of two hits on the day and scored just one run the entire day.

Shaw (2-2) had won their season opener entering Tuesday, but Claflin (2-6) outhit the Lady Bears 28-2 in the doubleheader to win both games.

The Lady Bears trailed 4-0 in the bottom of the first, before holding the Lady Panthers to one run in the second inning. Neither teams would score over the next two innings but Claflin was able to score four runs sparked by a single from Kaylon Perkins to bring home two teammates to stretch their lead 7-0 over Shaw in the sixth inning.

The Lady Panthers would score two more runs in the inning to close out the contest. The Lady Bears accounted for five errors in game one, while Frances Perry (Hamilton, NJ) took the loss at the mound after allowing 12 hits, nine runs and six errors.

In game two, Shaw allowed CU to take a 5-0 lead in the first inning. The Lady Bears failed to score in the top of the second as Claflin sprinted out to a 20-point lead by the end of the second inning. The Lady Panthers scored one run in third before the Lady Bears finally got on the scoreboard when Marie Goodman (Willingboro, NJ) singled to bring Julia Slade (Greensboro, NC) home for Shaw's lone score but that would not be enough to overcome the large deficit.

In the circle, Chyna Gross (Orange Park, FL) took the loss, allowing 21 runs on 16 hits in five innings.

The Lady Bears will look to recover on Friday, Feb. 18th when they travel to Merideth College for a non-conference doubleheader. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
