RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's softball team opened the 2016 season with a sweep of Voorhees College on Thursday at Worthdale Park.
The Lady Bears totaled 55 runs, 44 hits and 45 RBI's in the two games.
In the opening game, Shaw scored four runs in the first inning, then adding 12 more in the second inning to take an early 16-0 lead. The Lady Bears never looked back after holding the Lady Tigers scoreless for the remainder of the contest for a 31-0 victory.
Kiana Rogers pounded out her first career home run, while Tiffany Brooks (Efland, NC) added a triple and Marisa Richardson (Jackson, FL), Chakiryn Jackson (Goochland, VA), Christine-Evette Ngeve (Greensboro, NC) and Brittany Kline (Choctaw Beach, FL) all charted doubles.
Frances Perry (Hamilton, NJ) started for the Lady Bears, allowing no hits or runs, while striking out five in five innings.
In the second half of the doubleheader, Shaw pounded out 24 hits to cruise to a 24-0 win in five innings. Chyna Gross (Orange Park, FL) started for Shaw, allowing two hits, one walk, while earning 10 strikeouts in five innings.
Shaw (2-0) will travel to cross-town to Meredith College on Saturday, Feb. 13th for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch starts at 1 p.m.
