EKAYI, WINT LEAD SHAW XC IN SEASON OPENER

ELON, N.C. Freshman Peter Ekayi (Rumuruti, Kenya) of the Shaw University men's cross country team finished 51st overall individually amongst a total of 111 runners while senior Kaydi-Ann Wint (Kingston, Jamaica) led the efforts for the Lady Bears women's cross country squad with a 72nd finish and a time of 18:14.2 in the women's 4k race made up of 89 total runners.

 

The event that featured eight Division I schools. Ekayi was the first Bear to cross the finish line in the men's 6k race with a time of 20:01.9.

 

The Bears completed its season opener with an 11th place as a unit and second amongst schools that were not DI while the Lady Bears placed 10th overall and first amongst schools that were non-DI.

 

Sophomore Torotich Kiplagat (Elderet, Kenya) placed 98th overall with a finishing time of 23:08.1 while and junior Fabien Niyirora (Johnston, IA) posted a time of 24:10.4.

 

Senior Hannah Pealstrom (Aurora, IL) came in behind Wint on the women's side, with a finishing time of 18:18.8 while sophomore Damoni Neal (Newport News, VA) grabbed a time of 21:43.9.

 

Shaw men's and women's cross country will return to action on Sept. 6 at the VSU Opener hosted by Virginia State University in Ettrick, VA.
