RALEIGH, N.C. – Shaw University men's and women's tennis will host Catawba College Monday, Feb. 18 for a non-conference match with the men's and women's contests beginning at 3 p.m. at Lions Park.
This will be the home opener for both the Lady Bears and Bears for 2019. Admission is free and open to the public. Lions Park is located on 516 Dennis Avenue, Raleigh, N.C. 27604.
The Lady Bears are coming off a 9-0 setback to N.C. Wesleyan on Feb. 6. Senior Carmen Mantecon (Madrid, Spain) and junior Siria Dibe (Tucumon, Argentina) fell short 8-7 at the No. 1 doubles. At the No. 3 singles, Dibe took her opponent to the limit before falling 7-6 and 6-2 in the effort.
The Catawba women is coming a 7-0 win over Belmont Abbey on Feb. 9. The Indians are 4-0 on the season coming into Monday's contest against the Lady Bears. The last time the women met was on Apr. 12, 2018 at Catawba with the Lady Bears falling, 7-2.
On the men's side, Shaw also fell to N.C. Wesleyan, 9-0 also on Feb. 6. The Bears put up a good fight in the No. 2 singles by senior Ngonidzashe Makambwa (Mabelreign Harare, Zimbabwe) who fell short 7-5 and 6-3.
The Indians (2-2) dropped a 5-2 decision against Belmont Abbey on Feb. 9. Like the women, Shaw and Catawba met last year on Apr. 12, 2018 with the Bears falling 5-4 in Salisbury, N.C.
