PETERSBURG, Va. – The Shaw University men's tennis team earned its first victory of the season, defeating Virginia State University on Saturday. The victory snapped a five-game road skid for the Bears as they now stand 1-5 on the year. The Trojans dip to 2-4 on the season.
Shaw took a 2-1 lead over VSU after doubles competition. Freshman Oscar Del Granado (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) and junior Ngonidzashe Makambwa (Mabelreign Harare, Zimbabwe) picked up the first point of the match with an 8-3 win at the No. 1 doubles. Tandem sophomore Destine Udofe and junior Daniel Ac (Kikinda, Serbia) also grabbed an 8-3 victory at No. 2 doubles but Shaw fell 8-5 at the No. 3 doubles.
In singles action, Granado was a 6-1, 6-1 victor at the No. 1 position while Makambwa won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2. Udofe earned a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 4, followed by sophomore Enrico Baldon (Sao Paulo, Brazil) picking up a hard fought three-set victory, 6-2, 7-5, 10-6 to secure the win for Shaw.
The Bears will return to action again on Mar. 30 with a home contest with Virginia State at Worthdale Park. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m.
