RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University men's and women's tennis teams participated in the Barton College Tennis Invite Friday, Oct. 13 through Sunday, Oct. 16 in Wilson, N.C. Both the Bears and Lady Bears combined for four runner-up finishes and one championship winner in the event.
On the women's side, senior Marilyne Kamegne (Cameroon, Yaoundé) won the women's B singles after earning a 6-3, 6-4 victory over teammate and senior Simbiat Aleem (Lagos, Nigeria).
Senior Daniela Vanko (Montreal, Quebec) and freshman Carmen Mantecon (Madrid, Spain) finished runner-up in doubles action after suffering an 8-2 decision to opponents Daria Avram and Marissa Stevenson of Barton.
Mantecon finished runner-up in the women's A singles, falling 6-1, 6-1 to Barton's Avram.
In the men's singles competition, junior Ngoniclzashe Makambwa (Mabelreign Harare, Zimbabwe) made it to the finals but fell 6-4 in the first set, following a retiring in the championship of the men's A singles.
Junior Daniel Ac (Kikinda, Serbia) placed second overall in the men's B singles after falling to Barton's Alessandro Gerbino by the score of 6-4, 6-2.
The Lady Bears will officially begin their 2018 campaign at Liberty University on Feb. 11 at 4 p.m. while the Bears are scheduled to start their 2018 slate on Mar. 5 at Barton for a 2 p.m. first serve.
