RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University men's soccer team picked up their first shutout of the season defeating Mars Hill 4-0 Saturday afternoon in on the road. The win improves Shaw overall record to 2-6-1 on the season. The Lions also now stand at 2-6-1.
Shaw applied pressure early and did not let up posting 12 shots on goal during the first half with seven being credited as shots on goal. Freshman Brandon Linares (Kernersville, NC) tallied four of those shots, including a shot in the 36 minute to beat Mars Hill keeper for a goal to put Shaw ahead 1-0 at the break.
The second half saw Mars Hill tighten up on the defensive end to limit fewer Shaw shots. In the 61', a penalty would be called in the box awarding Shaw a penalty kick. Junior Danny Cameron (Edinburgh, Scotland) picked the correct side and finished the kick for the goal - giving Shaw a two goal cushion at 2-0.
In the 73' senior Andre Matzuda (Gardena, CA) converted on a pass from freshman Gianluca Evers (Brunswick Germany) for the Bears third goal but Shaw wasn't done just yet adding its fourth and final goal at the 81' as sophomore Fabricio Gama (Rio De Janiro, Brazil) found junior Sam Lister (Northallerton, England) for the final goal giving Shaw the 4-0 victory.
Sophomore Keeper Theo Delaleu (Les Essarts Le Roi) received credit for the shutout collecting three saves on the day.
Shaw returns to action Wednesday, Oct. 9 as they travel to Tusculum University. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
