RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University men's soccer team opened it's 2019 season with a hard-fought comeback 2-1 overtime victory over visiting Bloomsburg Sunday afternoon at The Mac Athletic Center.
This was the Bears first season opening victory in program history.
The Huskies from Bloomsburg got in on the scoring action quickly scoring their only goal just 14 seconds into the contest with a set play converting a header into the right corner. The Bears would get a few good looks before the end of the half but were unable to convert any into goals. The Huskies outshot the Bears 10-6 during the first 45 minutes.
Shaw would break the scoreless tie at the 59:28 mark as freshman Brandon Linares (Kernersville, NC / Bishop McGuinness) converted a pass from Carl Kennedy (Bolton, England / Chowan) for his first career goal to tie the contest at 1-1. Both teams had chances to go ahead before full time but were unable to convert sending the contest to overtime.
During the overtime period, the Bears would hit pay dirt for the game winner at the 99:29 mark with Andre Matzuda (Gardena, CA / Western Nebraska CC) splitting a pair of defenders and scoring with the assist from Georgious Petousis (Argolidas, Greece / Nea Genia Ziridi) to give the Bears the 2-1 victory.
After giving up the early goal, keeper Theo Delaleu (Les Essarts Le Roi, France) was credited with the win and five saves.
Shaw improves to 1-0-0 on the early season. Bloomsburg sees their record fall to 1-1-0. Shaw returns to action back at The MAC for a home match against Barton. Kick-off is slated for 6 p.m.
