RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University men's' soccer team officially kicks off their 2019 campaign on the road Thursday evening. The Bears will travel to Queens (N.C.) for a 7 p.m. match in Charlotte, NC.
The match will be streamed live from Dickson Field at the Queens Sports Complex via the Queens Athletics website or www.shawbears.com. Live stats will also be available.
This will be the first meeting in program history between the Bears and the Royals.
Shaw will be looking for their first opening season match win looking to avenge last season's 5-1 defeat to Chowan. Shaw carries a two game winning streak over from the 2018-19 season where the Bears finished 7-8-1 overall. The Bears look to improve on their road record from a year ago which saw Shaw drop seven road matches while winning four and tying one. Shaw was impressive at home winning three of their four home matches with their only blemish being an OT loss to Coker on September 25.
Coming off a six-goal season, senior Andre Matzuda (Gardena, CA) will look to shore up the Bears on the offensive side as the leading goal scorer returning. Sophomore Theo Delaleu (Les Essarts Le Roi, France) returns to man the keeper position for Shaw. Delaleu started 11 games for the Bears last season posting a 3-4-1 record with two shutouts and a .658 save percentage.
Shaw returns 14 letter winners while adding 12 new members to the 2019-20 squad.
The Royals from Queens (N.C.) were tabbed to finish second overall this preseason in the competitive 11 member SAC (Southern Athletic Conference). Queens finished their 2018-19 slate 10-6-1 overall while going 7-3-0 in SAC action.
