BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Shaw University men's soccer team improved to 2-1-1 on the season with a 2-1 road victory over Bloomsburg University on Sunday. Freshman Andre Matzuda (Gardena, CA) and Thiago Sooma (Sao Paulo, Brazil) each scored a goal in the victory.
Shaw took a 1-0 lead, as Matzuda scored one from freshman Moritz Lotzen (Hochberg, Germany) after 10:32 of action. The Bears held the 1-0 advantage at halftime and extended the lead in the 60th minute, when Sooma converted a goal off the goalkeepers head for the 2-0 scoring margin.
The Huskies cut the deficit to one when Tyler Madeira scored on a penalty kick at the 71st minute. From there, BU tallied six shots compared to the Bears one but great defense by Shaw would withstand the chances of a Huskies comeback.
Shaw held a 13-10 advantage in shots, including a 7-1 frame in shots on goals. Freshman Theo Delaleu (Les Essarts Le Roi, France) played all 90:00 and now has a record of 2-1-1 on the year at the goalkeeper position.
The Bears will return to action Saturday, Sept. 15 versus Cincinnati Clermont for a home contest at Durham County Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m.
