CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference announced its 2019-20 All-Conference awards for men's basketball during the conference's annual luncheon held inside the Charlotte Convention Center Monday afternoon. During the ceremony Shaw freshman guard Nigel Martin (Cleveland, OH) was named CIAA Rookie of the Year and named to the All-CIAA Rookie Team while fellow guard junior Greyson Kelley (Raleigh, NC) was named to the All-CIAA Team.
Martin was awarded top rookie honors and named to the All-Rookie Team by leading all CIAA freshmen in scoring during the regular season at 14.4 points per game while finishing in the top 10 in the CIAA at 6.6 rebounds per game, which also led all freshman. Martin registered a career high 34 points against Bowie State Dec. 7 while finishing in double figures in 16 contests overall.
Kelley was named to the backcourt of the All-CIAA Team, averaging 18.8 ppg on the season which ranked third overall in the league. Kelley also finished third overall in shooting percentage at 47-percent per contest and first overall in free throw percentage at 92-percent. Kelley's career high came against Morehouse on Nov. 15, 2019, posting 35 points including the game winning basket.
Shaw will open play in the 2020 CIAA Tournament against Fayetteville State University on Wednesday, Feb. 25 inside the Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, N.C. Tipoff is scheduled for 10 a.m.
If the Bears advance to the quarterfinal round, Shaw will meet the No. 2 seed of the North, Virginia Union on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. from the Spectrum Center.
